The US medical community has been buzzing about a potential $3 billion facility being built on a federal land near the Mexican border.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced Monday that it had awarded $3.5 billion to a Texas company called Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which is building a new state-of-the-art facility on the US side of the border.
“We are pleased to announce the groundbreaking agreement between AMD and the Department of Homeland Security,” said NIH Director Anthony Fauci.
The deal is expected to be completed by the end of the year, according to the NIH, and it is being touted as a major step toward the nation’s goal of building a national laser institute in the United States.
“In order to meet this goal, we need to have a laser hospital.
It’s a huge investment in health care facilities,” said Dr. William Thompson, director of the National Laser Institute at the NIH.
The facility, which will be called the Advanced Micro Nanotech Facility, will be built in two phases.
Phase one will begin in the city of Corpus Christi, Texas, and eventually move to the San Antonio facility.
The hospital will offer free and competitive exams and laser diagnostic testing to the public.
“This is a major milestone in the evolution of the Advanced Photonics Research Institute in the US, and the first of its kind anywhere in the world,” said the director of AMD, Dr. Anthony Hines.
“The Advanced Micro Nano-Optics Research Institute will build on our leading position as the world leader in advanced nanotechnology, which enables scientists and engineers to harness and harness our incredible power for the benefit of the American people.”
AMD’s CEO, Andrew D. Watson, told the Associated Press that the project would have an “important role in bringing the American medical system closer to the medical center of excellence.”
The company said it would bring in “experienced and talented personnel from across the country” and will be “a global leader in the field of advanced nanotech.”
The Advanced Micro Laser Research Institute (AMD) has said that the facility would allow for “the most advanced technology, the highest standards of care, and innovative technologies for patients, staff, and researchers” to be developed.
It has also said that it would help the US “bring advanced laser technology to the world.”
The site was initially scheduled to be built on federal land in Texas.
It was eventually moved to the city in 2019.
The Associated Press reported that the US Department of Health and Human Services approved the deal on March 30, 2020.
However, in a press release, AMD said that this decision was due to concerns over the project’s safety.
The government has said it was concerned that the cost of building the facility could be more than the project has received funding for, as it would require the installation of hundreds of thousands of additional cameras, sensors, and other equipment.
The AP reported that a spokesperson for the Department told the AP that the hospital would be fully operational by 2021.
It will also provide “an unprecedented opportunity for the US to expand its laser industry, which has never been done before.”
The government was also concerned that a “high degree of security” would be created by the facility, and warned that it could create a “risk to our national security.”
“This project is not just a demonstration project, it’s a demonstration of the potential of laser technology,” the spokesperson said.
The Advanced Nanotech Laboratory will be located on the property of the Department, which is a federal agency.
However the site is not being used for anything other than research.
“There is no military purpose,” said Fauco.
“It is really an opportunity to make this technology more accessible and to make it more affordable for everybody.”
Dr. Hines said that AMD will be able to develop its own lasers and will have the capability to develop other types of technologies.
“If they can create their own lasers, then they have an opportunity for everyone to see that they are doing something very innovative,” he said.
“They can make it accessible to the rest of the world, and that’s going to be a very big opportunity for us.”
